What Subsidence Is
Land subsidence is the gradual lowering of the ground surface over a broad area. In the Houston region the dominant driver has historically been groundwater withdrawal: removing water from underground aquifers allows the sediment layers to compact, and the surface above lowers as a result.
It is a well-documented regional phenomenon with a long record. It is measured, published, and actively regulated, and it is genuinely one of the more interesting pieces of Houston’s geological story.
It is also, in the context of your house, almost always the wrong explanation for what you are seeing.

Who Measures It
Three sources matter and all publish publicly.
The U.S. Geological Survey conducts long-term monitoring and analysis of land subsidence in the Houston-Galveston region, using extensometers, GPS stations, and other methods.
The Harris-Galveston Subsidence District was established to regulate groundwater withdrawal in Harris and Galveston Counties specifically to address subsidence. It monitors and publishes data within its jurisdiction.
The Fort Bend Subsidence District performs the equivalent role in Fort Bend County.
If someone tells you something about subsidence, ask which of these they are citing and for what period. Measurements are dated, they cover defined areas, and rates have changed considerably over the decades as groundwater regulation has taken effect.
The Scale Problem
Here is the core issue with applying subsidence to an individual foundation.
Subsidence is measured across a region, in a unit that describes the land surface over a broad area. A house occupies a fraction of an acre. If the whole area beneath your property lowers uniformly, your house goes down with it — and nothing in the structure is distressed, because there is no differential. A house that descends evenly is still a level house.
Distress requires differential movement: one part of the structure supported differently from another. That is overwhelmingly produced by conditions at the property scale — soil moisture varying around the perimeter, drainage, tree roots, fill consolidation, a plumbing leak — not by a regional trend acting evenly across a whole neighbourhood.
Subsidence can be part of a larger picture where its rate varies meaningfully over a short distance. But a regional measurement is not evidence about a specific address, and it should never be presented as one.

These are different mechanisms and confusing them leads to poor decisions.

What No Repair Can Do
We will state this plainly because the marketing sometimes does not.
No foundation repair addresses subsidence. Piers transfer building load to a more stable bearing layer beneath a specific property. They do not affect regional land surface elevation, and they cannot. If subsidence is occurring in your area, it will continue occurring regardless of what is installed under your house.
This is also why our warranty documents state exclusions explicitly. Coverage applies to the performance of the system we installed at the locations we installed it. Regional ground movement — subsidence and fault-related movement alike — sits outside what any residential contractor can warrant, and a warranty implying otherwise is not credible.
What This Means If You Are Worried
If you have read about Houston subsidence and wondered whether it explains the crack in your wall, the honest answer is: probably not, and the way to find out is to measure your house rather than to read about the region.
A foundation evaluation runs a relative elevation survey across your floor plane and maps the visible distress. That produces figures about your property. It tells you whether the floor is out, by how much, and in what pattern — which is the question you actually have.
Regional context is worth understanding. It is not worth mistaking for a diagnosis, and we will not use it as one.
