Editorial Standards

Last updated: September 16, 2026

Foundation content online is full of confident claims that cannot be supported. These are the rules we hold our own writing to, published so you can check whether we follow them.

Byline and disclosure

Cole Barrett is an editorial pen name used by Houston Foundation Repair to publish homeowner education. Technical reviewers and project contributors are credited separately. We do not invent named experts, fabricate credentials, or attribute project experience to people who did not perform the work.

Observation versus diagnosis

A crack, a sloping floor, or a sticking door is an observation. Whether it indicates a foundation problem is a conclusion that requires measurement and context. Our observation guides describe what you may be seeing, what an assessment considers, and what to document. They stop short of telling you what is wrong with your house, because that is not something an article can establish.

We do not diagnose from photographs, and we do not use a universal crack-width rule to declare a home safe or in need of repair.

Sources we use

  • Soils: USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service soil survey data for mapped series and their reported properties.
  • Subsidence: U.S. Geological Survey publications and measurements from the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District and the Fort Bend Subsidence District.
  • Fault mapping: published geological mapping, cited with its publication date and geographic scale.
  • Permits and process: current guidance from the relevant municipal or county authority.
  • Repair systems: manufacturer product documentation for system-specific descriptions.
  • Company practice: our own written terms, warranty documents, and project records.

We link sources beside the claims they support, and we separate what a source reports from our interpretation of it.

Limits we state explicitly

  • A soil map describes a mapped area. It does not score an individual property.
  • A regional subsidence measurement does not establish the condition of one foundation.
  • A generalised fault map cannot tell you about your lot, and no repair system resolves fault-related ground movement.
  • A permit count is not a count of failed foundations or completed repairs.
  • A wet floor, warm spot, or higher water bill does not prove a slab leak. That requires a plumbing assessment.
  • A warranty describes coverage and its exclusions. It is not a promise of permanent results.

Numbers and pricing

Where we publish price information, we date it, state its scope, and identify its source. We distinguish estimates, completed invoices, third-party published ranges, and illustrative calculations from one another. Any calculator on this site produces an illustrative range, never a quote.

We avoid citywide averages presented as if they apply to your house, unsupported housing-age risk percentages, neighbourhood rankings, and invented search or project statistics.

Project case studies

Case studies published on our blog describe general location, date, foundation type, the customer's initial concern, the assessment findings, the scope performed, who determined the approach, and any access or coordination challenges. We do not present a selected project as a citywide average, and we do not invent outcomes or customer feedback.

Review and corrections

Consequential structural explanations receive qualified review before publication. Guides carry an updated date that reflects genuine revision, not a rotation to appear fresh. If you find something inaccurate, tell us at quotes@houstounfoundationrepair.net and we will correct it and note the change.

What we will not publish

  • Fear-based claims or unsupported superlatives
  • Invented credentials, ratings, projects, reviewers, or offices
  • Promises of permanent results, insurance coverage, grant eligibility, or rankings
  • Copied city pages with the place name swapped and nothing local added
  • A repair recommendation for a reader based on a symptom, a home's age, or a ZIP code
